SEO, Ads and AI Changes in October 2026: What They Mean for Car Dealers

October 2026 brought several changes to how car buyers find dealerships online and how that traffic shows up in your reports. ChatGPT clicks started appearing as Direct traffic in Google Analytics, Google made links more prominent in its AI answers, and new reporting tools arrived in Search Console and Google Ads.

Some of these changes affect the figures you see in your monthly report rather than the number of people visiting your website. Knowing which is which will help you avoid misreading a drop in one channel as a fall in enquiries.

Why ChatGPT traffic suddenly looks lower

From around 9 October, many visits from ChatGPT started appearing as Direct traffic in Google Analytics 4. The change followed the rollout of GPT-6, OpenAI’s new model, which became the ChatGPT default on 7 and 8 October.

GA4 normally recognises a ChatGPT visit from two signals: a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag added to the link and a referrer showing where the visitor came from. After the update, many links arrived with neither, so GA4 had no way of identifying the source and filed the visit as Direct.

The visits themselves do not appear to have disappeared. An analysis by Adobe of around 500 pages found that ChatGPT visits fell by roughly 31,000 a day between 9 and 13 October, while Direct visits to the same pages rose by about 26,000 a day.

Has OpenAI responded?

OpenAI has not commented publicly, and it is not yet clear whether the issue has been fully resolved. In practice, a drop in ChatGPT traffic between 8 and 15 October could be explained by this tracking change rather than a fall in the number of visitors.

What it means for your dealership

If your October report shows ChatGPT visits falling and Direct traffic rising at the same time, the most likely explanation is this tracking issue rather than fewer people finding you through AI. A useful check is to look at the pages that usually receive ChatGPT visits, such as model pages, used stock pages or service pages, and see whether their Direct traffic increased between 8 and 15 October.

More links in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google announced on 15 October that AI Overviews and AI Mode will display links to websites more prominently. The changes are rolling out throughout October and include:

  • Inline links placed higher up in AI answers and appearing more often
  • A redesigned “Dive Deeper” section at the end of some answers, with image thumbnails and larger, more clickable links
  • A test of a new section at the top of AI answers that highlights the one or two official websites where a searcher can complete a task
  • Wider use of news carousels and clickable profiles for publishers and creators

Why the official websites section matters for dealers

The official websites test is aimed at searches where someone wants to get something done, such as booking a service, checking a dealership’s opening hours or viewing a specific car. These are the searches that turn into enquiries, so a prominent link above the AI answer could be valuable if the feature reaches the UK.

Google has not said how it chooses these sites. Clear service and booking pages, accurate Google Business Profile information and consistent dealership details across the web are sensible foundations either way.

Will it bring more traffic?

Clicks from AI Overviews are recorded as Google organic traffic, so any increase should appear in your organic figures and in Search Console rather than in a separate AI channel. It is too early to know how much difference the new links will make. Comparing click-through rates on searches that show an AI Overview over the next few weeks will give a clearer picture.

Other Google Search and Ads changes in October

The September spam update has finished

Google’s September 2026 spam update finished rolling out on 8 October after almost two weeks, which is longer than previous spam updates. Google has not announced an October core update. Some ranking movement outside named updates is normal, as Google makes smaller adjustments to its systems all the time.

Updated guidance on AI-written content

On 1 October, Google updated its guidance on using generative AI to create website content. The new version draws on its quality rater guidelines and highlights content made with little effort, originality or added value. Producing large numbers of pages without adding anything useful for readers may breach Google’s scaled content abuse policy.

For dealerships, this is a reminder that model pages, location pages and blog posts need genuine local and practical detail. Pages that repeat manufacturer descriptions or swap the town name between templates are the kind of content the guidance warns against.

Search Console reporting

The Performance report in Search Console can now show combined data for several countries or devices at once. Separately, Performance data was delayed by around 60 hours over the weekend of 10 and 11 October before returning to normal on 12 October, so any gaps in that period are a reporting delay rather than a loss of traffic.

New budget controls in Google Ads

Google Ads is introducing channel prioritization and budget allocation controls. Advertisers can mark channels as high or low priority and set a percentage limit on daily spend for low-priority channels, such as the Display Network or search partners. Setting a channel to 0% stops spend there. The controls will roll out across Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen campaigns over the coming months.

This is relevant for dealers because Google Vehicle Ads run through Performance Max. The new controls should make it easier to keep more of a campaign’s budget on Search, where buyers are actively looking for vehicles. Google has also said that from February 2027, Search campaigns with the Display Network switched on will lose their current spend allocation setup, which may shift spending between channels.

A clearer view of AI Max in Google Ads

Google Ads has added a report for AI Max that shows search terms alongside the ad combinations and landing pages Google used for them. It gives advertisers a better view of which searches are triggering their ads and where those clicks are sent.

What dealers should do now

Most of October’s changes call for a closer look at your reporting rather than an immediate change of strategy. These checks will help you read next month’s figures accurately:

  1. Add an annotation in GA4 covering 8 to 15 October, so a drop in ChatGPT visits and a rise in Direct traffic are not mistaken for a change in demand.
  2. Compare Direct and ChatGPT traffic on the pages that usually receive AI visits, such as model, used stock and service pages.
  3. Count ChatGPT traffic using the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag rather than the referrer, which is still missing on most clicks.
  4. Track click-through rates in Search Console for searches that show an AI Overview over the coming weeks.
  5. Keep service, booking and contact details consistent across your website and Google Business Profile.
  6. Review Performance Max and Vehicle Ads campaigns once the new channel controls appear in your account.

Frequently asked questions

Why has ChatGPT traffic dropped in Google Analytics?

From around 9 October, many ChatGPT visits started appearing as Direct traffic in Google Analytics 4. Links arrived without the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag or a referrer, so GA4 could not identify the source. The visits do not appear to have disappeared; they are being recorded as Direct instead.

Look for ChatGPT visits falling while Direct traffic rises between 8 and 15 October. The clearest check is on the pages that usually receive ChatGPT visits, such as model pages, used stock pages and service pages.

It is a test of a new section at the top of AI answers that highlights the one or two official websites where a searcher can complete a task, such as booking a service or viewing a specific car. Google has not said how it chooses these sites or when the feature might reach the UK.

Clicks from AI Overviews are recorded as Google organic traffic. Any increase from the new links should show in your organic figures and in Search Console rather than in a separate AI channel.

Google has not announced an October core update. The September 2026 spam update finished rolling out on 8 October, and some ranking movement outside named updates is normal.

Google Vehicle Ads run through Performance Max, one of the campaign types getting the new channel prioritization and budget allocation controls. Setting channels such as the Display Network or search partners as low priority lets you limit their share of daily spend and keep more of the budget on Search.
