SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO Explained for Car Dealers

This guide explains what each term means, how AI search has changed the way SEO works, how the four approaches fit together and what they mean for a car dealership website.

SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO all describe ways of making a dealership visible when people search for cars, servicing or finance. The difference lies in where that search happens. SEO focuses on traditional search results, while GEO, AEO and AIO focus on the AI-generated answers that now appear in Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and voice assistants.

What SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO mean

Each term describes a different place where a buyer can find your dealership. SEO is about ranking in the traditional list of search results. AEO, GEO and AIO are about being picked up by AI: being the answer an assistant gives, the dealer ChatGPT recommends or the source Google quotes in an AI Overview.

SEO: search engine optimisation

SEO is the practice of improving a website so it ranks higher in the traditional search results. For a dealership, that could mean appearing for “used cars in Southampton”, “MOT near me” or a specific model and location. It covers technical health, page content, internal linking, backlinks and local signals such as the Google Business Profile.

SEO is about ranking and earning the click. It is also the base that AI tools draw on when they look for information, which is why AEO, GEO and AIO all build on it.

AEO: answer engine optimisation

AEO is about making your dealership the answer when a buyer asks a question, whether they type it into Google, ask Siri or Alexa, or put it to an AI assistant. These tools no longer just list websites. They pick one clear answer and display it or read it out, often without the buyer clicking anywhere. AEO shapes your content so that the answer comes from you.

In practice, that means building pages around the questions buyers really ask, such as “how does part-exchange work?” or “how often does a hybrid need servicing?”, answering each one clearly in the first couple of sentences and using FAQ sections and schema markup so machines can find and lift the answer easily.

GEO: generative engine optimisation

GEO is about getting your dealership named in the answers that AI chatbots write. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to recommend a used car dealer in their area, the tool builds its answer from sources it can find and trust, then names a handful of businesses. If your dealership is not one of them, that buyer may never come across you.

GEO aims to make sure you are mentioned, cited or linked in those responses. The work focuses on helpful, specific content, strong reviews and consistent mentions of your business on trusted websites, as these are the signals AI tools use to decide who to recommend.

AIO: AI optimisation

AIO is most often used to mean optimising for Google’s AI Overviews, the AI-written summaries that now sit above the normal results for many searches. When Google builds an Overview, it links to the pages it took its information from. AIO aims to make your pages one of those sources, so your dealership appears at the very top of the results page, above the ads and the organic listings.

The term is also used more broadly to mean making a business easy for any AI system to understand. In both cases, the work centres on consistent business information, structured data and content that clearly explains who the business is and what it offers.

How AI search has changed SEO

AI search has changed what a successful search looks like. A search used to end with a list of links, and the job of SEO was to get the dealership’s page as close to the top as possible. Many searches now start with an AI-written summary, and some end there without a click. If a dealership is not part of that summary, it can be invisible even when it ranks well underneath.

Google’s AI Overviews appear above the traditional results for many informational searches, and Google launched AI Mode in the UK in July 2025 as a conversational way to search. At the same time, more people ask tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity to research cars, compare models or suggest local dealers.

This has shifted SEO in several practical ways:

  • From rankings to references. Being cited inside an AI answer can matter as much as holding a top-three position.
  • From keywords to questions. People type or speak longer, more specific queries, such as “what is a good family SUV under £15,000 with low tax?”
  • From pages to entities. AI tools look at the business as a whole, combining the website, Google Business Profile, reviews, directories and mentions elsewhere.
  • From traffic to qualified visits. Fewer people may click through for simple questions, but those who do arrive are often further along in their decision.

Traditional SEO has not been replaced. AI tools still rely on crawlable, well-structured websites to find their information, so the technical and content foundations of SEO remain just as important. What has changed is that ranking is no longer the only goal. Dealerships now also need to be the source AI tools choose to quote.

How SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO work together

The four approaches are best treated as layers of one search strategy rather than separate services. SEO gets your pages found and ranked, and the other three make sure AI tools use and recommend what they find. Most of the work done for one also supports the others.

  1. SEO provides the foundation. A fast, crawlable website with clear page structure, accurate stock pages and strong local signals gives search engines and AI tools something reliable to read.
  2. AEO turns that content into answers. Question-led headings, concise explanations and FAQ sections make it easy for Google, voice assistants and AI tools to pick out a direct response.
  3. GEO earns recommendations in AI chatbots. Helpful, specific content supported by reviews and mentions on trusted sites increases the chance of the dealership being recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
  4. AIO wins a place in Google’s AI Overviews. Structured data, matching business details across the web and a clear description of services help Google understand exactly who the dealership is and cite its pages as a source.

A well-written service page shows how this overlap works in practice. The page can rank in normal results (SEO), answer “how long does a full service take?” in a featured snippet or voice search (AEO), be quoted when someone asks ChatGPT about servicing costs locally (GEO) and appear as a linked source in a Google AI Overview (AIO).

What this means for car dealers

Car buyers research heavily before contacting a dealership, and much of that research now passes through AI tools. A buyer might ask an assistant to compare two SUVs, check what a fair price looks like for a three-year-old hatchback or find a dealer nearby with good reviews. Dealerships that appear in those AI answers have a chance to be considered before the buyer ever visits a website. Those that do not may be left off the shortlist altogether.

Visibility earlier in the buying journey

AEO and GEO help a dealership appear in AI answers while buyers are still comparing options. Model guides, comparison articles and finance explainers give AI tools useful material to quote, which keeps the dealership’s name in front of buyers who have not yet chosen where to buy.

Stronger local recommendations

Local searches such as “best used car dealer near me” increasingly return an AI summary alongside the map results. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent contact details, steady reviews and location pages that describe the areas served all help AI tools recommend the right branch to the right buyer.

Better use of existing content

Most dealer websites already hold valuable information about stock, servicing, finance and part-exchange. Restructuring that content around real customer questions and adding structured data for vehicles, locations and reviews makes it easier for both search engines and AI systems to find, understand and quote.

More qualified enquiries

When an AI tool has already answered the basic questions, the people who click through to a dealership’s website are often ready to view stock, book a test drive or request a valuation. Clear calls to action on stock, service and finance pages help turn that interest into enquiries.

Protection against inaccurate AI answers

AI tools sometimes repeat outdated opening hours, old brand franchises or incorrect services. Keeping the website, Google Business Profile and directory listings accurate and consistent reduces the risk of a buyer receiving the wrong information about the dealership.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO still relevant now that AI search exists?

SEO remains the foundation of AI search visibility. AI tools draw on websites that search engines can crawl and understand, so a technically sound, well-structured site is still needed before GEO, AEO or AIO can work.

SEO helps a dealership rank in the traditional results, but more buyers now get their answer from AI before they reach those results. AEO, GEO and AIO make sure the dealership is the answer, the recommendation or the cited source inside those AI responses.

AEO focuses on giving the direct answer to a specific question, often shown in featured snippets or read out by voice assistants. GEO is concerned with being mentioned or recommended within longer AI-generated responses from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

Dealerships can be mentioned in ChatGPT responses when the tool finds clear, trustworthy information about them online. Accurate business details, positive reviews, helpful website content and mentions on reputable sites all improve the likelihood, although no business can guarantee inclusion.

AI Overviews can reduce clicks for simple informational searches because the answer appears on the results page. Searches with clear buying intent, such as browsing stock or booking a service, still tend to lead people to dealership websites, and pages cited in the Overview gain visibility at the top of the page.

Structured data labels information such as vehicle details, business locations, opening hours and reviews in a format machines can read. This makes it easier for search engines and AI tools to interpret a dealership’s website accurately and use it as a source.
